Hi I’m Nox!

Welcome to Figuring Out Food.

I live with a number of allergies, intolerances, and severe IBS, and over the years I’ve come across a number of useful blogs, but they always have something or another I can’t eat. Because of this, I’ve had to adapt many recipes, learn to respect my body and alter my day to day meals.

I want to share what I know, and what I find out because I know just how stressful it is to eat when you don’t know if your body is going to betray you.

Why ‘Nox’?

Nox isn’t my real name, but it’s been an ‘in-joke’ for a while, and it just kind of stuck. I love that it’s different and much more interesting than my real name, so it’s become my ‘online name’.

My Food Allergies & Intolerances

My allergies and intolerances are plentiful, and I’m pretty sure there are still some we’ve not noted down/I’ve forgotten.

  • Gluten, wheat, barley, and rye.
  • Seafood
  • Fish
  • Oral Allergy Syndrome/ Pollen Food Syndrome: peaches, plums, apples, pears, avocado & more.
  • Olive Oil
  • Olives
  • Mushrooms

  • Dogs, cats, horses … essentially any animal with fur.
  • Hay
  • Mould
  • Medical Tape

  • Gluten
  • Wheat
  • Milk
  • Lactose
  • Egg
  • Soy
  • The Nightshade Family – tomatoes, eggplant, spices.

Do I stick strictly to all of these?

No. I find it difficult to avoid soy, and the nightshade family though I have to be careful with my intake. I also try to avoid ‘may contain’ and ‘made in a factory’ because I’ve been cross-contaminated far too many times. I once read that if it says that on a label there’s a 50/50 chance the item will contain an allergen or intolerance.
